Lovely pastel by Melville Stark (1904-1987). Stark was a member of the New Hope school of impressionists, and was mentored by and a lifelong friend of Walter Baum. Stark studied at the University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, and the Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He had much success as both an artist and academician. In the 1930s he taught at the Kline Baum School of Art, and later was the Director of Art for Muhlenburg College. He was also the founder of the Lehigh Art Alliance, and served as Director of the Allentown Art Museum.
As an artist, his works were widely exhibited and were met with critical success. He won many awards and his works are included in both museum and prestigious private collections. Stark summered in Rockport, and was an active and well regarded member of that artist’s colony as well. This pastel has a site image of 9x12, is double matted and framed to 14 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches. It is an appealing winter scene and is in excellent condition. Great example of the artist’s work.
