    Description

19th Century English School, Ships at Sea, Oil on Canvas.
The painting shows two sailing boats on open sea, one under English flag. It seems like one of the boats is tacking to cede the right-of-way to the boat in the center of the painting. The painting measures 30” x 20”. The stamp on the verso of the canvas is a canvas preparer’s stamp that reads “Prepared by Charles Roberson Long Acre London”. There is also a paper label on the stretcher which is too far gone to read.
Charles Roberson was one of the most important “colourmen” in London in the 19th century (https://www.hki.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/archives/roberson). Also, the mark on the verso resembles one that was also used on William Powell Frith’s “The Derby Day”, which is dated 1856-58, so I assume that our painting must come from around that timeframe, or at least from 1853 to 1889 (https://www.npg.org.uk/assets/files/pdf/research/artists_materials_8_Roberson.pdf).
